Creating Generator Clips and Adding Them to Sequences

All the Final Cut Pro generators can be accessed either from the Effects tab of the Browser or from the various submenus of the Generator pop-up menu in the Viewer. This pop-up menu is available when the Video or Audio tab is displayed in the Viewer. When you choose a generator, it appears in the Video tab of the Viewer.

You can view and adjust the settings of generator clips before or after you add them to your project.

Note: With the exception of the Bars and Tone generators, generators always adopt the frame size of the sequences they’re edited into.

To open a generator clip in the Viewer
Do one of the following:
  • Click the Video or Audio tab in the Viewer, then choose a generator from the Generator pop-up menu in the lower-right corner of the Viewer.

  • In the Effects tab of the Browser, double-click a video generator.

  • Drag a generator from the Effects tab of the Browser to the Viewer.

The generator clip appears in the Viewer. Click the Control tab in the Viewer to access the settings for the generator.

Tip: To see the generator clip and its settings at the same time, you can create separate Viewer windows by “tearing away” either the Video tab or the Controls tab, or both.

To adjust generator clip settings
  1. Open a generator clip in the Viewer.

  2. Click the Controls tab to view that generator’s parameters, and adjust the controls to suit your purposes.

All generators have certain parameters that can be used to customize their effects. See Video and Audio Generators Available in Final Cut Pro for more information. The most basic controls, such as keyframe and Reset buttons, are the same as those for other effects discussed in Viewing and Adjusting a Filter’s Parameters.

When you’ve finished adjusting the parameters, you can add a generator to the Timeline.

To add a generator to a sequence
Do one of the following:
  • In the Viewer, click the Video or Audio tab and edit the currently open generator into your sequence, the same as any other clip.

  • Drag a generator from the Effects tab of the Browser directly to a track in the Timeline.

The generator clip appears in the Timeline (and in the Canvas).

You may want to see the generator in the Canvas while you are adjusting its settings.

To view the resulting effect in the Canvas while you make adjustments to a generator clip already in a sequence
  1. Position the playhead over the generator clip in the Timeline.

The generator clip appears in the Canvas.

  2. Double-click the generator clip in the Timeline.

The generator clip appears in the Viewer.

Note: The sprocket holes in the Viewer’s scrubber bar confirm that the generator clip is a sequence clip.

  3. Click the Controls tab in the Viewer.

The Controls tab displays the generator settings in the Viewer.

Note: Some generators do not have a Controls tab or adjustable settings.

As you make adjustments to the settings in the Controls tab of the Viewer, you see the resulting effects immediately in the Canvas.
